On August 26, 2010 DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, announced a world-wide recall of about 93,000 replacement systems, due to a higher than expected fail rate on two products:

The ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing Systems affected by the DePuy hip replacement recall first became available in July 2003.
