Leaving the scene of an accident can have consequences almost as serious as causing the accident itself. A recent truck crash left a Florida man seriously injured, and now the driver is facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
The accident happened last week on Ridgewood Avenue. A 50-year-old man was traveling south in his Nissan pickup truck when he collided with a man using his motorized wheelchair, who was attempting to cross the street. The truck driver reportedly swerved to avoid him, but the left side of the truck hit the wheelchair.
The 74-year-old victim was apparently thrown to the ground, and the driver of a Nissan sedan that had been following behind the truck was unable to brake in time, striking the man with her car. She pulled over to help the man, while the driver of the pickup truck briefly stopped about 100 feet away from the crash and then sped off.
A police officer happened to be driving behind him at the time and pulled him over. The man apparently claimed to have no involvement in the accident and said he left the scene of the accident because it appeared the man was getting adequate help. But authorities say there was evidence at the scene to show his truck did indeed strike the motorized wheelchair.
Unfortunately, the crash left the victim with serious injuries. Shortly after the crash he was listed in critical condition at Halifax Health Medical Center.
